Manchester based band 'The Tribe' (formerly 'The World Wide Message Tribe') was formed in 1992 with the mission to express the Christian message through their hip hop music to the young UK generation. The band do not only do gigs, but also take lessons and assemblies in schools, with of a mix of live performance and teaching from the bible to communicate their message.
This is not exactly the glamorous world of excess showbiz you would associate with a hip hop group who have sold well over 1/2 million albums, won over ten Dove Awards and had seven No.1 radio singles in the US. But that's what makes this band different. The original founder and now manager of The Tribe, Andy Hawthorne, sums up the ethos of the group: 'It's not about money, it's not about the glamour. The buzz we get is from seeing young people realise that Jesus is alive and wants to be their friend.'
'The Tribe' likes to make a difference for the good, unlike other hip hop groups caught carrying guns, being involved in nightclub shootings and gang related crime. The only thing the band carry is the Bible. Not exactly what you would expect.
