Cowboys for Christ Modern Crusaders Series

Continuing my series on 'Modern Crusaders' this photo essay is a documentation on another iconic group, cowboys, namely 'Cowboys for Christ'.

Cowboys are normally stereotyped by society. They are known for being hard-bitten, hard drinking, with an outlaw lifestyle, unaccustomed to the niceties of formal churches and religion. But this story illustrates cowboys in a different light, breaking all stereotypes of the cowboy behaviour and conventional church.

Cowboy church is very different from what most people call church. Cowboys turn up as themselves in chaps and hats and don't have to conform to fit in. It's church with country-style music for hymns and worship, and parishioners that turn up to listen to the sermon on horses and bring dogs. Baptism is also completely unique as well, as it is conducted in a horse trough, instead of a font.

Overall, the Christian cowboy sub-culture continues to expand all over the world. This story captures some of the colourful characters and traditions of the movement.A taste of the modern-day church and an eye opener-to those who have not even been aware 'Cowboys for Christ' exist.

Highly Commended, Sunday Times Ian Parry Award 2002
